Carver Fellowship for Social Justice
The renowned George Washington Carver got his start in college at Simpson College. Carver once said, "I owe to Simpson College my real beginning in life." As a lifelong learner, entrepreneur, scientist, artist and humanitarian, Carver represented the qualities and characteristics of a true scholar and leader. Carver Scholars and Fellows exemplify the ideals that are so much a part of the Carver legacy at Simpson.
The Carver Fellowship Program selects students who have demonstrated leadership, academic accomplishments, and service to others. This scholarship is awarded to students from distinctive and broadly diverse backgrounds who exhibit potential for social justice, leadership, scholarship, and engagement. These are the principles that guided Carver's life.
Students chosen for The Carver Fellowship for Social Justice will be awarded a scholarship of $2,000. This fellowship is renewable provided the student is in good academic standing, enrolls and successfully completes the 1 credit Social Justice and Leadership course each semester they are enrolled. Course requirements are listed below.
Semester 1
10 hours of in-class time
45 hours of service learning (monument visit(s), trips, etc.)
1 reflection assignment (alternative paper)
1 book review or debate
1 professional field interview
Semester 2
~ 30 hours in-class
2 community engagement activities
2 reflections
Event planning
Video assignment
Priority consideration will be given to candidates for this scholarship who submit the Simpson College application for admission and supporting materials by February 15, 2023.
